This leads to a reduction in the osmotic gradient across the renal tubular cell. Thus, even when there is maximum tubular permeability under the action of vasopressin, free water is unable to flow normally from the lumen to the medulla and, consequently, urinary concentrating ability is impaired. Any cause of polyuria may result in this renal defect.
